The score was 6-2, 7-5, 6-4.

A year ago Nadal was in fact upset in fourth round by Swede Robin Soderling. The recent match seemed a deja vu for him of his last year’s upset even though Bellucci performed inspired game in duplicating the feat of Soderling on the Philippe Chatrier Court, the same court.

Bellucci, in his career’s first time, reached grand slam tournament’s round of 16. He reached here by upseting 14th seed Ivan Ljubicic.

Well, in round of 16 Bellucci dominated Nadal with some of his fine plays. He was seen much improved since both met first time two years ago in the first round.

In the opening game Bellucci dropped serve with a deuce, but two games later he did displayed some outstanding plays. Nadal, on the other hand, broke serve in the seventh game.

Bellucci recovered with a break point in the second set in game five, but two faults were committed in game nine. This helped Nadal to wrap up chance with his serve.

However, Bellucci gave a stiff challenge to Nadal, his toughest opponent, by dropping four times his serve.

Nadal said after the tournament, “I played probably my best match today in the tournament.”

Nadal had 109 points in total and Bellucci just 89. Nadal had 27 winners and Bellucci only could collect 18 points.

It wasn’t an easy draw for Bellucci, ousting some in form players along the way, going the distance of 3 sets- 4 times in the week. Bellucci showed great fighting qualities just when he needed and looks like the person to beat on clay this year. He beat Gonzalez, defending champion in the semi finals and then defeated Juan Monaco in the final. In the final Bellucci won the first set comfortably 6-3 but then lost his concentration completely, dropping the next set to love. Thomaz managed to weather the storm with some impressive serving in the early going of the third set and started blazing  forehand and backhand winners from everywhere, as well as showing great touch in and around the net.  Monaco simply had no answer to Bellucci’s all round game.

Well done T-Bell! We look forward to you trying to win at home next week, Costa do Sauipe, Brazil.

Thomaz Bellucci lost in straight sets to Fernando Gonzalez (CHI) 6-3 6-4. Bellucci played well in the opening exchanges at 2-2 in the opening set, Bellucci was using his inside out forehand to great effect. But then came the errors, he lost confidence and lost a string of points very quickly and Gonzalez closed out the set 6-3. Thomaz regained some of his confidence in the second set only to lose serve when it really mattered and Gonzalez was to solid winning the second 6-4.

Victor Triocki beat Thomaz  Bellucci in straight sets. Thomaz played well but the Serb managed to raise his game at crucial points. His head to head with Garcia-Lopez now stands at two to love. Thomaz played well shrugging off eleven out of twelve break point opportunities against serve.

He faces a stiffer task in victor trioki  , the rather unpredictable Serbian talent who received a bye in the first round.

If Thomaz wins his first round match he will play the number 5 seed Philip Petzschner.

Thomaz has yet to play Guillermo Garcia-Lopez . Both prefer clay but I definitely think the match will favour Thomaz.


Garcia-Lopez is an experienced Spanish player.

Unfortunately Nicolas Lapentti found the form of old against the number one Brazilian ,Thomaz Bellucci.(76(2) 64 75).

In an emotional five set victory over a top doubles pair,The Lapentti brothers found new heights.

Marcos Daniels then had to play the in form Nicolas Lapentti in what would turn out to be the deciding rubber. In an excruciating long tie. Lapentti held his nerve to win in 5 sets .

Unfortunately Brazil will have to wait another year before joining the elite world group.


Lapentti deserves credit for showing incredible heart throughout the tie.
